While landscaping can add immensely to the value, beauty and comfort of a church site, most architectural firms do not provide detailed landscaping design in their scope of services unless specifically requested by the owner. Many jurisdictions will require a rudimentary landscaping plan consisting of a site plan indicating the location, type and size of new and existing trees and shrubs, areas of sod and mulch, as well as an erosion control plan. It is now common for permit authorities to require landscaping islands in the parking areas based upon the amount of pavement. These islands are usually located at the ends of parking rows. Landscaping islands, however, can become an impediment to snow removal. In transition yards (a green area separating the church parking lot or buildings from adjoining residential or commercial property) a screen of trees and shrubs is also often required by permit authorities.
There are countless features to choose from but each addition must complement the existing decor on the primary building structure. If you have copper trim and downspouts around the home, consider adding copper lighting fixtures and an enclosure or railing with copper accents. You do not want your designs to clash so that the home looks ill put together overall.
Some people opt to transition their balconies or terraces into functional dining areas. For instance, you can install a covered table for serving breakfast or brunch. Residents can dine outside on warm, sunny days while watching the sun come up. There are even rolling bars that you can put out here for making mimosas and other libations outdoors.
Before investing any money into the implementation of your design ideas, make sure that these are in conjunction with local building codes. Local regulations could significantly limit the addition of special features in this area in an effort to promote safety. Consult with the planning department to find out which concessions must be made before construction is started. This will eliminate the need to backtrack in your construction efforts and the associated loss.
